It has been a while since we last posted on this forum. Rest assured we have been keeping up to date with what is going on in the forum, and ensured that it operates as efficiently as possible so as to provide you with the best online experience possible.

A few of things:
  • Some might have seen random outages on the forum for 10-15 minutes or so. Those were all maintenance related. Sadly nobody can predict hardware/equipment and sometimes they fail. This is why...

Recent Emails Received Tue, 29 Nov 2016 22:45:35 +0000 (dimopoulos) dimopoulos
There have been a couple of topics started from members that feel that the site has been hacked or someone is impersonating LHCF and sending emails.

The story
Our support system decided today to stop working (as it should). As a result I had to recreate the queue, which is a function that allows the support software to receive emails from the...

Just a friendly reminder that you now have the ability to change your username.

Click User CP and navigate at the bottom of the screen. The last entry on the left menu is a Username Request.

Username requests are honored within 72 hours so long as the username requested does not violate any rules (distasteful, derogatory etc.). If you receive a message with an error it might mean that the username you are requesting is either taken or too short/too long.

Please do...

2016-05-14 - Maintenance Mon, 16 May 2016 20:52:15 +0000 (dimopoulos) dimopoulos
Thank you all for your understanding during the last maintenance window. I understand it was short notice but that was pretty much the notice I was given to perform the task.

We had to move our whole server farm to a different data center, and one cannot do that without shutting the servers down.

The move has been completed and the site should be operating as normal. During the testing phase, we also discovered a couple of issues that could in some instances make the site appear...

Post Upgrade News Sun, 20 Mar 2016 18:56:47 +0000 (dimopoulos) dimopoulos
A huge thank you to all for your patience and understanding these last few days. I know it has been hard for you to not be with your friends and your hair care online resource but as we have explained it was a task that had to be completed and there was no way around it.

Due to the volume of our data, the import took a lot longer than expected. The fact that some (..... whistles....) were hitting the refresh button relentlessly slowed things a bit. At one point I had to take the...

User Experience And Javascript Sat, 31 Oct 2015 15:39:37 +0000 (dimopoulos) dimopoulos
Some of you have been experiencing issues with the site, primarily user experience. An example would be to click on the "Like" button and be redirected to a confirmation page instead of the "Like" action being applied right there on the spot.

The reason for this is javascript in your browser. Javascript is a language embedded on the site to help with the user experience mostly and perform some behind the scenes tasks. The language is dependent on the user's browser and it can be...

Once again thank you for your patience during the recent downtime/updates of last week.

At the start of the week, corruption was detected in one of our database tables. This is something that does not happen very often but it does happen - nothing we can do about it, other than just repair the database and move on.

There was a 4-5 hour downtime initially which fixed the database problem but not entirely. As a result I had to perform the same task at the end of last week when the...

Upcoming upgrade 4-4/4-5 Sat, 23 May 2015 15:05:55 +0000 (dimopoulos) dimopoulos
Due to the fact that the search feature has been acting up badly to the point that it is really unusable, we will upgrade the forum software this coming weekend. The search software is showing its "age" and stops working after a few searches are completed. It is time we replaced it with something that does work.

There are a few things that I need to sort out before the upgrade, but if I cannot address them, I will do so after the upgrade.

I expect to bring the forum offline...

Upcoming Upgrades Fri, 03 Apr 2015 13:06:40 +0000 (dimopoulos) dimopoulos
We have been all experiencing issues with the forum mainly with the search engine. I understand you are frustrated and trust me so am I, because the performance of the forum has not been stellar the last couple of months.

For the last few months we have been slowly upgrading our hardware and software on the servers (that run this forum) and in the next couple of weeks we will upgrade the forum software.

There are plenty of reasons for the upgrade and changing the forum...

The Username Request feature that is available to all subscribed members, allows you to change your username in order to correct a typo or just to change it to something better.

This feature has been heavily abused by some members who changed their username in order to bring negativity in the forum and get away with it.

Effective immediately, all members are only allowed to change their username only one time. We will be checking whether you have requested a username in the...

There will be scheduled maintenance on the forum between today and until Wednesday. You will not be able to access the forum while the maintenance is performed.

The maintenance window is around midnight of each of the dates above (EST/EDT time) and could extend to several hours. Since this is going to be a database maintenance we are taking our time, ensuring database integrity and no loss of data.

Site update and Signatures Tue, 17 Apr 2012 20:45:21 +0000 (dimopoulos) dimopoulos
Just a quick heads up that we are experiencing an issue with our database server. The problem is with one specific query that is taking a lot longer than usual. We are in the process of identifying the bottleneck so as to solve it. Although many might not experience any delay some might, so just be aware that we are working on it.

It is also that time of the year where I would kindly ask you to shrink your signatures. We go through this every year so please be kind to other...

2012-01-24 - Update Part 2 Wed, 25 Jan 2012 13:45:43 +0000 (dimopoulos) dimopoulos
I guess everything happens today doesn't it.

We have experienced a DDOS attack from Asia (Distributed Denial Of Service i.e. someone is making a ton of page requests per second in an effort to bring your site down), hence the downtime. We managed to isolate the offending IP addresses and block them but the attack is still going on but on a smaller scale.

We are working on getting this issue sorted out so please be a bit patient.

I had to shut down the forum for a brief period of time to perform necessary database maintenance tasks. Everything is in order now.

I am still working on rebuilding the search index which will take some time but will be done in less than an hour.

I apologize for the short notice. I understand that some of you might be wondering why can't we perform these tasks at a different time (say midnight). This is what we usually do but in some cases like today, we have to take...

Mobile Applications update Wed, 11 Jan 2012 14:01:53 +0000 (dimopoulos) dimopoulos
A quick update with regards to our mobile applications.

I had very little luck in getting the developers of the mobile application to assume ownership of bugs in the software and fix them. I have asked numerous times for the 'Thank you' addition but 8 months later we have nothing.

To that effect I found a different provider that has also a proven record in the industry and will be able to provide us with the same application so as you can access LHCF on the go :)
